Solar Panels, Eco-Grazing, and Enhancing Local Biodiversity: A Perfect Synergy.

Overview

The redevelopment of the former Maisières quarry, incorporating both energy production and biodiversity conservation, exemplifies the successful transformation of industrial sites into environmentally beneficial and energy-sustainable areas. This project seeks to repurpose disused quarries into spaces that actively support biodiversity while integrating renewable energy solutions for long-term sustainability.

The rehabilitation of the former Maisières quarry, focusing on local biodiversity protection and the installation of solar panels, represents a highly effective synergy. By combining ecological and energy objectives, the project maximizes its positive environmental impact.

With the Tradecowall landfill permit finalized in February 2024, etherra submitted a single Class 2 permit to the Mons municipality in June 2024 for the installation of a solar field. The 6.6-hectare site is located on Rue Grande in Maisières, between the Portes de Maisières complex and SHAPE. This site, formerly a quarry backfilled with soil from construction sites, has gradually evolved into a habitat rich in biodiversity.

Several natural features characterize the site. Ponds provide a habitat for the protected midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans), while a designated limestone grassland area will be preserved, remaining free of solar panels. These measures ensure that the project integrates seamlessly with the local ecosystem, reinforcing both energy transition efforts and ecological preservation.

SunBuild and etherra will install a ground-mounted solar field consisting of 15,500 panels, arranged with a 1-meter spacing between rows. The panels will be positioned in an east-west orientation to optimize electricity production by maximizing sunlight exposure and aligning with the natural layout of the land.

This project aims to significantly contribute to advancing Wallonia’s progress in relation to:

  • The Walloon PACE initiative

  • The Green Deal

  • The European Recovery Plan – RePower Europe

Furthermore, the project is designed to be fully compatible with a Renewable Energy Community.

The Project Aims to Accelerate Three Key Transitions:

Citizen Transition

Through the energy community initiative, citizens, local residents, and businesses will have access to locally produced green energy at a reduced cost, fostering greater energy independence and sustainability.

Environmental Transition

As required by the permit issued by the Walloon Region, several ecological measures are being implemented to protect local biodiversity: twenty ponds for the natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita) and three further 100 m² ponds designed for the midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans). Runoff water is managed by a new retention basin. The vegetation between and around the rows will be maintained by eco-grazing rather than mechanical mowing.

Energy Transition

Over the next thirty years, the Maisières plant will generate 100% local, renewable electricity, with a capacity of 11.7 MWp from 15,500 solar panels. The project aligns with the goals of a Renewable Energy Community.
